| Question: |
Why is Nordic Backup better than traditional tape backup? |
|
Answer: |
Traditional tape backup solutions are often expensive. In addition, you can lose valuable time on routine maintenance, finding the right tapes, changing tapes and backup verification.
Nordic Backup requires no investment and is fully automatic. All you need is an Internet connection. |
|
| Question: |
Which operating systems support the Nordic Backup? |
|
Answer: |
Nordic Backup can run on all Windows versions from Windows 95 to Windows 2008 and Windows 7, Mac OS version 10.2 and newer, Linux, Unix and Novell and other systems that support Java2. |

| Question: |
What can I back up with Nordic Backup? |
|
Answer: |
You can actually create a backup of everything on servers, workstations and even home computers.
Using Windows, you can back up both open and closed files, so you do not need not close Outlook while the backup is running.
You can backup MS. Exchange, MS. SQL, Lotus Domino, Oracle and MySQL servers, while they are running with no need to dismount the databases during the backup.
For MS. Exchange, you can create a backup of the complete Information Store and the individual e-mails.
You can also backup Windows System State containing the computer's registry, system files. For servers this also include the Active Directory.
In addition, Nordic Backup includes Delta Block Technology which ensures that you only need to transfer the portion of a file that has changed since the last backup. This is highly efficient for large files like Exchange, SQL, Lotus Notes and Oracle databases and other flat file databases. |

| Question: |
How much storage space do I need? |
|
Answer: |
We recommend that you choose as much storage space as the files you want to backup require. Here’s an example. If you’re storing 7GB of files, you should also order 7GB of storage.
All files are compressed by 30 to 50% before they are sent from your computer and will therefore take up less storage on the backup. The left over starage will then be used for the archive where modified and deleted files are stored. |
|
| Question: |
How long does a backup take? |
|
Answer: |
Backup time depends on the number of files you’re backing up and the speed of your Internet connection.
The first backup always takes the longest time; but subsequent backups are usually resolved quicker, since only the changes since the last backup are being transferred.
If your Internet connection has a capacity of 512 KB’s, you can transfer about 5GB’s per day. |

| Question: |
Can Nordic Backup can be used in conjunction with tape backup? |
|
Answer: |
Yes, but the configuration should be chosen with care so that the two solutions do not conflict with each other.
Nordic Backup should not run simultaneously with the tape backup.
Both Nordic Backup and the tape-backup program has to exclude each others temporary folders used for temporary files during the backup.

| Question: |
How do I backup multiple computers under one account? |
|
Answer: |
You can backup multiple computers on the same account by installing Nordic Backup Pro for each computer, and then configure a backup set for each computer.
Note that Nordic Backup Pro on each computer can see all backup set under the account. So when you log onto Nordic Backup Pro on each computer, you’ll be prompted to enter the encryption key for each backup set.
To easily distinguish the various backup sets and daily backup reports from each other, just name each backup set with the corresponding computer name, i.e.,. "Server01 - Filebackup" and "Server02 - Filebackup" etc..

| Question: |
My backup no longer starts automatically, what can I do? |
|
Answer: |
There may be several reasons why the backup does not start automatically, for instance, a process that is hanging or a firewall that prevents access to the Internet.
Start by following these steps on your computer. Contact Nordic Backup Support if the problem continues:
1. Stop the "Online Backup Scheduler (Nordic Backup)" Service
2. Using the Windows Task Manager, terminate the processes "bJW.exe", "bschJW.exe" and "ntbackup.exe" if they are running.
3. Delete the entire content of the folder "C:\Program Files\Nordic Backup Pro\ipc\Scheduler"
4. Delete the entire content of the folder "C:\Users\[USER]\.obm\ipc" or "C:\Documents and Settings\[USER]\.obm\ipc"
5. Delete the entire content of the folders for the temporary backup files (Location is shown in the "Settings" under each backup set)
6. Verify that the firewall allows access to outgoing traffic for the following programs:     C:\Program Files\Nordic Backup Pro\jvm\bin\bschJW.exe     C:\Program Files\Nordic Backup Pro\jvm\bin\bJW.exe
7. Start the "Online Backup Scheduler (Nordic Backup)" Service |

| Question: |
How do I setup System State Backup on Windows 2008? |
|
Answer: |
Windows 2008 System State Backup is unfortunately not yet supported with its own backupset in Nordic Backup Pro. You must instead use this workaround:
- In Nordic Backup Pro, create a file backupset named: SystemState - "Server Name"
- We recommend that you save the SystemState backup on a drive other than the C: drive, but if the server has only a C: drive you need to go to the registry subkey [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\Current Control Set\ Services\wbengine\SystemStateBackup], and add/change "AllowSSBToAnyVolume" (dword) with a value of 1.
- Create the folder "WindowsImageBackup" on the drive you want to save the System State backup on.
- Under "Backup Source", select ONLY the folder you just created.
- In the “backup schedule” settings, you must correct the schedule to run only 1 time per week (or 1 once a month). Friday is recommended, but other days may also be selected.
- In the "command line tool" create the following two Pre-Backup Commands (Enter drive name for the drive you created the folder "WindowsImageBackup" on (C: / D: / E:) where it says [DRIVE]):
Name: Remove Old System State Dump
Command: RD [DRIVE]\WindowsImageBackup /S /Q
Working Directory: [DRIVE]\
Name: Create SystemState Dump
Command: C:\Windows\System32\wbadmin.exe START SYSTEMSTATEBACKUP -backuptarget:[DRIVE] -quiet
Working Directory: [DRIVE]\
They must be created in this order so that the old backups are removed first.
- If there is also a general file backup on the server, be sure the folder [DRIVE]\WindowsImageBackup is NOT included in this backup since it will be a double backup of the folder.

| Security |
|
| Question: |
Is it safe to send my files over the Internet? |
|
Answer: |
Yes, here at Nordic Backup we put security first. First by encrypting your files with 256 bit AES encryption, using the encryption code you have chosen. Then, the encrypted files are transferred via an SSL encrypted tunnel to Nordic Backup, which also ensures that Nordic Backup is the recipient of your files.
Your files are encrypted and therefore double assured that Nordic Backup is the recipient when sent over the Internet. |
|
| Question: |
How are my backup files stored at Nordic Backup? |
|
Answer: |
Your files are stored in two geographically separate data centers on dual servers with redundant hard drives. Therefore Nordic Backup retain several copies of all your files at two separate and highly secure locations.
Both data centers are equipped with physical three level access control, alarm, cameras, locked server cabinets, dual emergency power batteries, diesel generators, dual cooling and dual Gigabit Internet connections.
The files are located at Nordic Backup in exactly the same condition as when they were received from your computer. They are all compressed and encrypted so that only your personal encryption key can open the files. |

| Question: |
Can I get virus on my computer by using Nordic Backup? |
|
Answer: |
No, you cannot get a virus on your computer by using Nordic Backup. But you can get a virus through your Internet connection, which is required in order to use Nordic Backup.
It is therefore important to always make sure to protect your computer with both a firewall and an antivirus program. |
